Kilmurry – Cill Mhuire
Each weekday this week we will give a brief ‘preview’ of each team along with details of team management. First to have the honour of being previewed are Kilmurry, they go into this competition confident of success and intent on doing the ‘two in a row’ as they last won this league when it was played in 2009.
Background Information
In 2009 Kilmurry won the tournament, with a little bit of help from some ‘villagers’ but then again every team that day had a few lads from other parish teams. They will be disappointed not to be able call on the scoring machine Niall Gilligan, who is now plying his trade with St. Finnachta’s, along with a few others due to the much talked about ‘residency rule’. They do however have the services of a well drilled side with youth and experience present and they also have the luxury of calling on the ‘Ballysheen brigade’. Ballysheen is a much sought after pocket of the parish with St. Mary’s, Cappa, St. Finnachta’s and the Mountain also all trying to claim it, similar to Rockall off the coast of Ireland/Iceland/Faroe Islands/UK. However, for the time being they will assist Kilmurry. On paper the Kilmurry side appear to be a formidable force and are optimistic of a repeat success of 2009.
Management
Brian Culbert is their player manager and he has able assistance from Adrian Hogan, Tom Keogh and Declan Sheedy.
Did you know?
When one looks at the ‘Territory Map’ the Kilmurry selection has the largest land mass to pick from. They will be all out to reclaim their title with hurling fanatic Tom Keogh using the vast surrounds to get the troops into shape with refreshments served in the Pumphouse. Apart from these grueling physical sessions he has also being teaching them how to do the legendary dropshot which could very well come in handy.
Chances?
On paper, in an even tournament it must be said the Kilmurry boys will fancy their chances of success again with a number of players such as the Balysheen duo John Fennessy and Seadna Morey along with the senior experience of the likes of Brian Culbert and Rory Shanahan. Add in Christy Griffin, Eric Lynch and Ed Skehan, who will give it his all and get stuck in no matter who he is on, and you have a well drilled side.
