St. Mary’s overcome Kilmurry to reach the final…(SMB GAA Notes)

St. Mary’s 1-12 v 2-7 Kilmurry

Parish Hurling League Round 3 @ Seanchoill

The eagerly anticipated clash of St. Mary’s and Kilmurry was expected to be a cracker and it definitely stood up to its billing. This tie had plenty of excitement for the watching spectators with the result of the game in the balance entering the final few minutes.

The presence of a strong wind enabled Kilmurry to get the upper hand in the first half and they were deserving of their 1-6 to 1-2 interval lead. St. Mary’s got off to an ideal start when a through ball into the danger area found Alex Morey who gave Pa Freeman no chance to raise the game’s first green flag. However, after this Kilmurry settled and had points from Kevin Lynch (two), Darragh McNamara, Declan Morey and Paul Corbett to edge ahead. Martin Conlon replied back for the townies before Tommy Morey and Conor Deasy traded frees. The final score of the half went the way of the Brian Culbert, Adrian Hogan, Tom Keogh and Declan Sheedy managed Kilmurry with Kevin Lynch getting through for a goal that put them in the driving seat ahead of facing the wind for the second twenty.

On the turnover it was the village team that made all the running and with the help of the aforementioned strong wind they created numerous chances. Conor Deasy, Donald Devanney and Tadgh Keogh clawed back the deficit only for Kevin Lynch to get his side off the mark with a point and stretch the lead to two. The tide soon changed to St. Mary’s favour with points from Conlon, the Deasy brothers and Darragh Fitzgerald edging the John O’Meara, Johnny Corbett, Jude Kearney and Mikey Russell mentored team ahead only for a potential disaster to strike . Kevin Lynch used his strength to power through before netting past Stephen Fleming to notch his second major of the game to give his team a slender lead. The village team did not die down and showed good team work rate for the last few minutes to finish the strongest with efforts from Alex Morey and Conor Deasy closing out the win.

Overall, it was an exciting game with plenty skill and good score taking on display. There was also a couple of yellow cards handed out by referee Kevin Walsh with St. Mary’s now into the final thanks to their win. Kilmurry, can also qualify for the final if they win their remaining games and results go their way.

St. Mary’s were best served by Cathal Walsh, Tadgh Keogh, Donald Devanney, Conor Deasy and Alex Morey. Kilmurry had good performances from Darragh McNamara, Tommy Morey, Brian Culbert, Errol Tuohy and Kevin Lynch.
